Finished attached redwood pergola casting slatted shadows on a deck

Attached Redwood Pergola

A house-attached redwood pergola built on site to shade an exposed deck without closing it in.

The problem

The deck took direct afternoon sun and went mostly unused through the warmer months.

The challenge

Attaching to the house means the ledger and flashing detail has to keep water out of the wall.

How we solved it

The ledger was flashed and fastened into structure, and rafter spacing was set to break up the low afternoon sun without making the deck feel dark.
